Do You Need a Permit for a Fence in Amarillo?

Usually not. The City of Amarillo's Building Safety Department says most residential fences 8 ft tall or less don't require a permit. That's not a free pass, though: every fence still has to follow the city's building and zoning codes, including height limits in front and rear yards and special corner-lot rules. See our fence height rules for the numbers.

The big exception: pools. Regardless of height, building, altering or repairing the required barrier around a swimming pool or spa needs a city permit. We file it for you.

Who Issues Permits

  • City of Amarillo: Building Safety, Simms Municipal Building, 808 S. Buchanan St., Suite 104, 806-378-3041. Permits are filed online through MGO Connect. The city has adopted the 2021 International Residential Code with local amendments.
  • City of Canyon: Permits & Inspections, 301 16th Street, 806-655-5034. Canyon applies its own code, so we check its rules separately.
  • Bishop Hills, Timbercreek Canyon, Lake Tanglewood: each is its own small municipality with its own rules and deed restrictions.
  • Bushland and other unincorporated areas: no city permit office, but subdivision deed restrictions often apply.

Why the 8 ft Rule Matters

Amarillo's exemption follows the 2021 International Residential Code, which the city adopted with local amendments. Because ordinary backyard fences don't need a permit, nobody at the city reviews your layout before it goes in. If a fence breaks the front-yard or corner-lot limits, the fix comes later, and it's expensive. That's why we check the rules on every job even when no permit is filed.

When a Permit Is Needed

  • Fences taller than 8 ft
  • Any pool or spa barrier, including repairs
  • Retaining walls over 4 ft, measured from the bottom of the footing

HOA and Deed Restrictions

No city permit doesn't mean no approval. Neighborhoods like The Colonies have an association that enforces a master declaration, and the canyon communities have deed restrictions. We prepare drawings, product specs and color samples for your application.

Texas811 asks anyone digging to contact them at least two working days ahead, not counting holidays. It's free, and we submit the request on every job.
