Why Iron Works So Well on the High Plains
An open picket fence has almost nothing for a 50 mph gust to push against. That makes iron and ornamental steel the most wind-proof fences we build, and they don't crack in a hard freeze or dent the way thin materials can in a spring hailstorm.
- Curb appeal: black iron frames a brick ranch or a historic Wolflin bungalow without hiding it.
- Front-yard friendly: City of Amarillo zoning caps fences inside the required front yard at 4 ft, which is the classic height for an iron front-yard fence.
- Security without a wall: pickets keep kids and dogs in while you still see the street.
- Low upkeep: our dry air is easy on metal. A powder-coated finish and a touch-up now and then keep it sharp.

Choosing Between True Wrought Iron and Ornamental Steel
Most "wrought iron" fences sold today are actually welded steel, and that's a good thing for most homeowners. Here's how the options compare:
Powder-coated ornamental steel
Prefabricated steel panels with a baked-on finish. They go up quickly, cost the least of the metal options, and come in several picket and top styles. This is what we install on most Amarillo front yards and pool enclosures.
Custom welded iron
Built to your measurements, often with scrolls, rings, finials or a custom arch over the gate. It costs more and takes longer, but it can match an older home or an existing iron railing exactly.
Picket and post size
Heavier pickets and posts resist the occasional bump from a mower or a car backing out of an alley. Corner and gate posts get the heaviest steel we use.
Mixing with masonry
Iron panels between brick or stone columns is a popular look on Amarillo's newer streets. We can set panels between existing columns or work alongside your mason.
Rust
Rust starts where the finish is scratched. In our dry climate it moves slowly, and a quick sand and touch-up stops it. We seal cut ends and weld points before we leave.
How an Iron Fence Install Works
Iron goes in fast once the layout is set.
Measure and design
We measure, confirm the front-yard setback and corner-lot rules, and pick styles and gate sizes with you.
Paperwork
Most iron fences need no Amarillo permit. Pool enclosures do, and we file those on MGO Connect, the city's online system.
Locates and footings
Texas811 marks utilities, then posts are set in concrete footings.
Panels and gates
Panels attach to the posts, gates are hung and latches adjusted so they close cleanly.
Touch-up and cleanup
Every scratch from install gets touched up, and the site is cleaned before we go.
Front Yards, Corner Lots and Iron
Iron is the fence most Amarillo homeowners pick for the front of the house, so it's worth knowing the city rules before you fall in love with a 6 ft design. Inside the required front yard, fences are limited to 4 ft. On a corner lot, that 4 ft limit applies along the shorter street side and within 10 ft of the longer one, so the side yard often has its own height break. Near intersections, keep fences open and low so drivers can see around the corner.
We lay out every front-yard fence against these rules before any post goes in. If you want more height for privacy, we'll show you where a taller fence can start behind the front-yard line. Full details are in our fence height rules guide.
Built for Hail, Snow and Northers
Amarillo averages about 18 inches of snow a year and gets large hail with spring storms. Iron handles both. Snow slides off the pickets instead of loading a solid panel, and hail that would crack cold vinyl just bounces off steel.
- Open design means no wind load worth worrying about, even on exposed lots.
- Gate stops and drop rods keep wide gates from swinging in a gust.
- Raised bottom rail leaves room for drifting snow and keeps the rail out of mud.
Frequently Asked Questions
How tall can an iron fence be in my front yard?
Inside the required front yard, City of Amarillo zoning limits fences to 4 ft. Behind the front-yard line, fences can go up to 8 ft. Corner lots have extra rules we'll walk you through.
Does an iron fence need a permit in Amarillo?
Most don't, as long as they're 8 ft or under. An iron fence that serves as a pool barrier always needs a permit, which we handle.
Will an iron fence rust here?
Slowly, if at all. Our dry air is easy on metal. Scratches are the usual starting point, and a touch-up kit takes care of them.
Can you add a gate opener?
We install drive gates with heavy hinge posts and can set them up for an opener so your gate company or electrician can finish the job.
Is iron good for keeping a dog in?
Yes, for most dogs. For small breeds we use closer picket spacing or add puppy pickets along the bottom.
Can you match my existing iron railing?
Usually. Custom welded iron can copy picket spacing, scrolls and finials from a porch railing or an older fence.
