Gates That Stand Up to the Wind

A gate is a big flat panel hanging on two hinges. In a 50 mph gust it becomes a lever pulling on its post, and every slam against the latch loosens something. Here's how we build gates that last in Amarillo:

  • Heavy hinge posts in deep concrete. A weak hinge post is the number-one cause of sagging gates.
  • Steel gate frames inside wood and vinyl gates so they stay square.
  • Drop rods and ground sleeves to pin the inactive leaf of a double gate.
  • Gate stops and wind latches so a gate can't swing past its post or blow open.

Planning the Right Gate

Measure what goes through

A trash cart needs a 3 ft opening; a riding mower usually needs 5 to 6 ft; a pickup and trailer need 12 ft or more. RVs and boats often call for 14 to 16 ft of double gate. We measure your equipment and the turning space at the estimate.

Swing or slide

Swing gates are simplest. Where there isn't room to swing, or where drifting dirt and snow would block a swing, a cantilever rolling gate slides sideways without a ground track.

Alley gates

The city places residential dumpsters in many alleys and doesn't allow blocking access to them. We position alley gates so they swing clear of the dumpster pad and the trash truck's path.

Latches and locks

Gravity latches for walk gates, lockable latches for alley gates, drop rods for double gates, and self-closing, self-latching hardware wherever a pool is involved.

Pool gates

Any gate that's part of a pool barrier is part of a permitted structure in Amarillo, so repairs and replacements need a permit. We handle it.

The process

How a Gate Project Works

New gate or repair, the steps are the same.

Look and measure

We check the posts, the opening and what needs to fit through, then quote in writing.

Set or reset posts

Hinge and latch posts are set or reset in concrete, with a Texas811 locate first.

Build and hang

The gate is framed, hung level and fitted with hinges, latch, stops and drop rods.

Test in the wind

We swing, latch and lock it repeatedly and adjust until it closes clean.

Fixing a Sagging or Dragging Gate

Our most common Amarillo gate repairs:

  • Resetting the hinge post that the wind and clay soil have pulled out of plumb
  • Replacing a rotted wood hinge post with steel
  • Adding a steel frame or anti-sag cable to a wood gate that has dropped
  • New heavy-duty hinges and latches that line up again
  • Adding a gate stop so the wind can't slam the gate past its post

Gate work is often part of a fence repair or replacement, so mention it when you call.

Iron Entry Gates

A front-yard iron fence needs a gate that matches. We build arched and flat-top iron walk gates, and single or double drive gates between brick or stone columns. Iron gates don't fight the wind the way solid gates do, so they stay aligned with simple hinges and a good latch.

  • Arched, flat or spear-top designs
  • Hinge posts sized for the gate width
  • Set up for an opener on drive gates

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide should my RV gate be?

Usually 14 to 16 ft for a double gate, depending on the RV and the turn into the yard. We measure both at the estimate.

Why does my gate keep sagging?

The hinge post is usually moving. Clay soil and wind loosen it over time. Resetting it deeper or switching to a steel post fixes the cause.

Can you add a gate to my existing fence?

Yes. We cut in the opening, set new posts and hang a gate matched to your fence as closely as possible.

Do you install gate openers?

We build drive gates ready for an opener, with heavy posts and hinges, so your opener installer can finish the job.

Can an alley gate block the dumpster?

It shouldn't. The city doesn't allow blocking dumpster access, so we position alley gates to swing clear.

Do pool gates need a permit?

Yes. In Amarillo, building or repairing any part of a pool barrier needs a permit, which we file for you.
