Signs Your Fence Needs Replacing
- Wood posts rotted or broken at the ground along much of the fence
- Sections that lean every spring and need propping up
- Boards that are gray, split and pulling off their nails
- Alley-side damage from years of trucks, dumpsters and trailers
- A fence that's too short for your new dog or too low for privacy from a new two-story next door
Many of Amarillo's older neighborhoods are on their second or third wood fence. Replacement is the time to switch to steel posts and stop rebuilding after every windy season.

Choosing What Goes Back Up
Replacing a fence is your chance to fix everything you didn't like about the old one. Questions we'll walk through at your estimate:
Same material or something new?
Most Amarillo homeowners stay with cedar but move to steel posts. Others switch to iron in front, chain link on a long back line, or vinyl in a sheltered yard.
Same height?
Behind the front-yard line, the city allows up to 8 ft, so this is the time to go taller if a neighbor's second story looks into your yard. Inside the front yard, 4 ft is the cap.
Same line?
Old fences aren't always on the property line. We work from your survey so the new fence lands in the right place, and we keep it clear of alley dumpster access and utility lines.
Better gates?
Add an alley gate, widen a side gate for a riding mower, or put in a double drive gate for a trailer. See gate installation.
Shared fences
If the fence is shared with a neighbor, it helps to talk before work starts. We can quote both sides and work around your neighbor's dogs and schedule.
Our Fence Replacement Process
Most replacements finish within a few days.
Estimate and plan
We measure, review your survey, and list tear-out, materials, gates and cleanup on one written quote.
Locates
We submit a Texas811 request at least two working days before digging.
Tear-out
Old boards, rails, posts and footings come out and are hauled off, not stacked in the alley.
New posts and fence
Steel posts go into fresh concrete, then rails, boards or panels and gates.
Walk-through
We test every gate and latch with you and leave the yard raked and clean.
Keeping Your Yard Secure During the Swap
Dogs and kids don't stop using the yard because the fence is coming down. We plan the job so the old fence and the new one change over quickly, often on the same day for each side of the yard. If a section has to stay open overnight, we'll tell you in advance and can set temporary panels.
Got a pool? An Amarillo pool barrier always needs a permit, even for repairs or replacement, and the pool can't be left open. We schedule that work so the barrier is back up the same day and file the permit for you. Details in our permit guide.
Tear-Out and Haul-Away, Handled
- Everything goes: boards, rails, posts and old concrete footings.
- Alley stays clear: debris goes straight on our trailer, so the dumpster and alley stay open for the city truck.
- Landscaping protected: we work carefully around sprinkler lines, trees and beds along the old fence line.
- One crew start to finish: removal and the new install happen back to back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to replace my fence in Amarillo?
Usually not, if the new fence is 8 ft or under and follows zoning heights. Pool barriers always need a permit, and Canyon and the small towns around Amarillo have their own rules. We check for your address.
Can the new posts go in the old holes?
Rarely. Old concrete usually has to come out or the new posts get offset. We decide based on the condition and the new spacing.
How long does a replacement take?
Most backyard replacements take two to four days for tear-out and install combined.
Do you haul away the old fence?
Yes. Tear-out and haul-away are itemized on your quote, and nothing is left in the alley.
Can I keep my wood fence but fix the posts?
If the boards are in good shape, a steel post retrofit may be all you need. See fence repair.
Should I go to 8 ft?
If privacy from a two-story neighbor matters, 8 ft is allowed behind the front-yard line. We'll design the posts and footings for the extra wind load.
