Wood Fence Installation in Amarillo, TX

A cedar privacy fence is still the backyard standard in Amarillo. The ones that last here stand on galvanized steel posts in concrete, not wood posts that rot at the ground and snap in a spring norther. We build 6 and 8 ft wood fences from the alley line to the front corner of the house.

Why We Put Amarillo Wood Fences on Steel Posts

The National Weather Service office in Amarillo notes that winds of 50 mph or more hit this area every year, mostly in winter and spring. A solid 6 ft wood fence acts like a sail in those gusts, and the weak point is always the post. Wood posts soften at the ground line, then a strong west wind finishes them off and a whole run lays down at once.

  • Galvanized steel line posts don't rot, and they flex less than wood when a norther pushes on the fence.
  • Concrete footings sized for the height of the fence and the open ground around your lot.
  • Wood rails bolted to steel brackets, so the boards look like a classic wood fence from both sides.

Most of Amarillo sits on Pullman clay loam, a heavy soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, with a hard caliche layer below. Deep, well-set posts ride out that movement far better than shallow ones.

Choosing Your Wood Fence

Cedar or pine?

Western red cedar holds its shape better in our dry, gusty air and takes stain beautifully. Pressure-treated pine costs less and is a solid choice for long runs, but it tends to twist and check more as it dries out on the High Plains.

6 ft or 8 ft?

Behind the front-yard line, City of Amarillo zoning allows fences up to 8 ft on or near the property line. An 8 ft fence gives more privacy from a two-story neighbor, but it also catches a third more wind, so we tighten post spacing and size the footings for it. Inside the required front yard the limit drops to 4 ft. Details are in our Amarillo fence height rules.

Caps, trim and stain

A top cap and trim board shed snow melt off the end grain and stiffen the top of the fence. A penetrating stain slows the graying that intense sun and dry wind cause. Both are small add-ons that pay off here.

The process

How We Build a Wood Fence in Amarillo

From first call to final cleanup, here's what happens.

Free on-site estimate

We measure the run, mark gates and corners, and give you a written quote with a layout drawing.

Utility locates

Texas811 needs at least two working days' notice before any digging. We submit the request so lines are marked before we auger.

Steel posts in concrete

We auger through the clay and into the caliche where needed, then set galvanized posts plumb in concrete.

Rails and boards

Rails bolt to the post brackets, and boards go on straight with exterior-rated fasteners.

Gates and cleanup

Gates are hung on heavy posts, latches tested, and the old fence and debris hauled away.

Keeping a Wood Fence Good-Looking in the Panhandle

Wood lasts longer here than in humid parts of the country because it isn't constantly wet. What wears it down in Amarillo is sun, dry wind and wide temperature swings. The NWS notes temperature drops of 50 to 60 degrees in 12 hours aren't unusual, and that constant expanding and shrinking opens cracks in unprotected boards.

  • Stain every few years. A quality penetrating stain keeps boards from bleaching gray and splitting.
  • Clear drifts and tumbleweeds. Blown dirt and weeds packed against the bottom boards hold moisture and push on the fence in high wind.
  • Aim sprinklers away. Daily spray on the same boards is the fastest way to rot them, even in a dry climate.
  • Check gates after a hard freeze. Clay soil heaves and settles, and a quick latch adjustment keeps a gate from dragging.

Alley Fences and Back Gates

A lot of Amarillo homes back onto a paved alley, and that changes how we lay out the rear fence. The city places residential dumpsters in many alleys and doesn't allow residents to block access to them, so we keep gates and posts clear of the dumpster pad and the truck's path.

  • Alley walk gates make trash day easy and keep you from hauling bags through the house.
  • Garage-access gates for homes with a rear-entry garage or a parking pad off the alley.

If your old alley fence is leaning or missing boards, see fence replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to build a wood fence in Amarillo?

Usually not. The City of Amarillo says most residential fences 8 ft or under don't need a building permit, but they still have to follow zoning height limits, including the 4 ft limit inside the required front yard. A fence around a pool always needs a permit. See our Amarillo fence permit guide.

Why steel posts instead of wood?

Wood posts are the first thing to fail in an Amarillo wind. Steel posts don't rot at the ground, and set in concrete they hold the fence upright through the gusts that flatten weaker fences every spring.

How long does a cedar fence last in Amarillo?

With steel posts and a stain every few years, a cedar fence commonly lasts well over a decade here. The boards usually outlive wood posts by years, which is why the post choice matters so much.

Can you build an 8 ft wood fence?

Yes, behind the front-yard line. We tighten post spacing and size footings for the extra wind load an 8 ft fence carries.

Can I hide the steel posts?

Yes. We can face the posts with cedar trim on your side, or on both sides, so the fence looks all wood.

How long does installation take?

Most backyard wood fences take two to four days once utilities are marked and materials are on site.
